More Details on Our Top Picks
342-in-1 Multi Game Cartridge for N64 Consoles
This cartridge stands out for its versatility, supporting all major regional N64 consoles with a robust 16GB memory card for game storage. Unlike the Retrotech Super 64 Plus, which offers more games but lacks extensive save features, this option provides a more comprehensive experience for those wanting both variety and save management. The main tradeoff is the complex setup process for adding or deleting titles, which can be less user-friendly. It’s ideal for dedicated collectors or gamers who want a region-free, all-in-one cartridge with flexible save options. However, users seeking a plug-and-play experience without technical setup might find this less accessible.
Pros:- Region-free compatibility across all major consoles
- Supports game saving and management with SD card
- Includes a 16GB memory card for extensive storage
Cons:- Requires a controller memory card for certain save types
- Complex setup for adding or deleting games
Best for: N64 enthusiasts who want a region-free, customizable cartridge with game management features.
Not ideal for: Casual players seeking a simple, ready-to-play cartridge without setup complexities.
- Compatibility:All USA/EUR/Japan N64 consoles
- Region-Free:Yes
- Memory Card Included:16GB
- Supports Save Files:Yes
- Supports NTSC/PAL:Yes
- Additional Features:Add/delete games, save game files
Our verdict“Best suited for tech-savvy collectors who want a flexible, region-free cartridge with extensive storage options.”
Retrotech Super 64 Plus 340-in-1 Multi Game Cartridge for N64 Console
This cartridge offers an impressive 340 classic N64 games, making it a top choice for players seeking variety. Compared with the Super 64 Plus, which also provides 340 titles, the key difference is in packaging—this one includes printed instructions that enhance the authentic retro experience. While it provides a broad collection, the lack of details on game licenses and emulation quality means some titles may not perform perfectly, and there’s no warranty support. It’s perfect for nostalgic players who prioritize game volume over specific game quality, but those wanting guaranteed performance might prefer official cartridges.
Pros:- Large library of 340 classic N64 games
- Region-free for use across multiple regions
- Includes printed instructions for easy setup
Cons:- No official licensing or support for game quality assurance
- Performance of emulated games may vary
Best for: Retro gamers wanting a broad selection of classic N64 titles without breaking the bank.
Not ideal for: Players who prioritize game quality, official licensing, or guaranteed performance over quantity.
- Number of Games:340
- Region Compatibility:Region Free
- Console Compatibility:N64
Our verdict“Ideal for nostalgia-driven gamers looking to expand their library with a wide array of classics at an affordable price.”
Super Mario 64 for Nintendo 64 (Renewed)
This renewed version of Super Mario 64 provides a reliable way to experience the classic 3D platformer with enhanced graphics and smoother controls. Compared to multi-game cartridges, it offers a focused, optimized experience for Mario fans who want the original game with minor improvements. The main limitation is its platform exclusivity—it’s solely for Nintendo 64—and it lacks any additional content beyond the original game. While some reviews mention minor technical hiccups, it remains a favorite for purists who value authenticity over variety. It’s less suited for those seeking a modern remaster or new features.
Pros:- Classic game with improved graphics and controls
- Suitable for solo or multiplayer gaming
- Renewed for quality at a lower cost
Cons:- Limited to Nintendo 64 platform only
- No new content or gameplay features
Best for: N64 enthusiasts craving a pristine, authentic Mario experience without extra frills.
Not ideal for: Players looking for a multi-game experience or modern remakes beyond the original game.
- Number of Players:4
- Platform:Nintendo 64
- Type of item:CD-ROM
- Rated:Teen
- Product Dimensions:5.71 x 3.46 x 2.32 inches
- Item Weight:4.6 ounces
Our verdict“Perfect for purists and fans wanting a high-quality, authentic Mario experience on N64.”
Super 64 Plus 340-in-1 Multi Game Cartridge for Nintendo 64
This plug-and-play cartridge offers instant access to 340 games, making it highly appealing for casual players and retro collectors alike. Compared to the Retrotech Super 64 Plus, which also boasts a large game library, this cartridge emphasizes ease of use with minimal setup. However, the broad catalog means some titles may lack the polish or official licensing found in original cartridges, and the specific game selection isn’t detailed, which might limit appeal for picky players. It’s best for those who want quick access to a variety of titles in one cartridge, but not for players seeking guaranteed game quality or updates.
Pros:- 340 classic games in one cartridge
- Plug-and-play, no setup required
- Compatible with Nintendo 64
Cons:- Game titles and compatibility vary
- Limited information on specific game lineup
Best for: Casual gamers and collectors wanting rapid access to a large library without fuss.
Not ideal for: Players seeking curated, high-quality titles or official licensed games.
- Product Dimensions:6 x 4 x 1 inches
- Item Weight:2.39 ounces
- Manufacturer recommended age:8 years and up
- Category Rank:#9 in Electronic Learning System Software Cartridges
Our verdict“Great for quick gaming sessions and expanding your N64 library with minimal effort.”
N64 Games Cartridge 800-in-1 for Nintendo 64 with 32GB Pre-loaded Memory Card
This multi-game cartridge stands out for its enormous library of nearly 5000 titles, making it ideal for players who want variety without hassle. Compared with smaller multi-game options like the Retrotech Super 64 Plus 340-in-1, this model offers a far broader selection, though the sheer volume can lead to compatibility hiccups and duplicate files. Its full 64DD emulation opens up expanded gameplay possibilities that few other cartridges can match. The inclusion of multimedia features like MP3 playback adds extra value, but the large size and specific console requirements mean it’s less suited for casual players or those with older Nintendo 64 models.
Pros:- Massive library of nearly 5000 pre-loaded games
- Full 64DD emulation expands gameplay options
- Fast load times and smooth performance
- Includes multimedia functions like MP3 playback
Cons:- Compatibility issues may cause duplicate game files
- Requires specific console versions for optimal performance
Best for: Collectors and hardcore gamers seeking a vast, all-in-one solution for N64 titles.
Not ideal for: Casual gamers or those with limited storage who prefer straightforward gameplay without emulation or multimedia features.
- Game Titles:Approximately 5000
- Memory Card:32GB
- Transfer Rate:23.8 MiB/s
- Emulation:Full 64DD support
Our verdict“This cartridge is best suited for dedicated collectors who want a comprehensive N64 library with added multimedia features, despite some compatibility concerns.”
GoldenEye 007 (Renewed)
Among the many options, this renewed copy of GoldenEye 007 provides a reliable, tested experience at a lower price point, ideal for nostalgic players. Unlike multi-game cartridges, it offers a focused, authentic experience, though it lacks the extras like additional titles or multimedia functions. Its tested condition guarantees functionality, but missing the original case and manual makes it less ideal for collectors seeking pristine packaging. For those who prioritize a genuine, playable copy of one of the most iconic N64 titles without paying a premium, this is a practical choice.
Pros:- Affordable renewed option
- Tested and cleaned for quality assurance
- Authentic Nintendo 64 game cartridge
Cons:- No original case or manual included
- Limited to a single game experience
Best for: Players looking for an affordable, authentic version of a classic game without extra frills.
Not ideal for: Collectors who value complete packaging or those wanting a broad library of games.
Our verdict“This cartridge offers a solid, budget-friendly way to enjoy GoldenEye 007, especially for players focused on gameplay over packaging or extras.”
Donkey Kong 64 – Nintendo 64
Donkey Kong 64 shines as a vibrant, multi-faceted game that benefits from the Expansion Pak, which enhances graphics and gameplay complexity. Compared to simpler titles like Mario Kart 64, this game offers a richer, more varied experience with mini-games, multiplayer battles, and exploration. However, the need for the Expansion Pak, which isn’t included, adds an extra cost, and the game itself feels somewhat outdated for modern gaming setups. It’s ideal for players who enjoy detailed environments and multiplayer fun but might disappoint those without the Expansion Pak or seeking more contemporary titles.
Pros:- Supports multiplayer gameplay for up to four players
- Features mini-games and diverse activities
- Enhanced graphics with Expansion Pak support
Cons:- Requires an Expansion Pak (not included)
- Game may feel outdated compared to newer titles
Best for: Fans of adventure games who own or plan to purchase an Expansion Pak for enhanced experience.
Not ideal for: Players without the Expansion Pak or those seeking fast-paced, modern-style gameplay.
Our verdict“Donkey Kong 64 is perfect for players who want a deep, multiplayer adventure on N64, provided they have the Expansion Pak installed.”
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch (Renewed)
Despite the confusion around its compatibility, this renewed cartridge claims to be for Nintendo Switch but is listed with Nintendo 64 specs, which raises questions about its usability. Compared to classic N64 titles like Mario Kart 64, it offers modern, fast-paced fighting action with a wide roster of characters. However, the limited packaging and potential data inconsistency make it less appealing for purists or collectors. It’s better suited for players who want a tested, affordable way to enjoy Super Smash Bros. on Switch, not N64.
Pros:- Authentic Nintendo Switch game, tested and guaranteed
- In good condition with a clear label
- Affordable renewed option
Cons:- Does not include original case or manuals
- Compatibility info is inconsistent—listed as for Nintendo 64 but for Switch
Best for: Budget-conscious players seeking a tested copy of Super Smash Bros. on Nintendo Switch, despite listing issues.
Not ideal for: N64 fans expecting authentic hardware or those seeking original packaging and manuals.
- UPC:683332081017
- Compatible Console:Nintendo Switch
- Item Dimensions:5.2 x 3.1 x 1 inches
- Item Weight:4 ounces
- Type:CD-ROM
- Rated:Everyone
Our verdict“This cartridge is a cost-effective way to access Super Smash Bros., but its listing inconsistencies mean it’s better suited for Switch players than N64 enthusiasts.”
Mario Kart 64 (Renewed)
This renewed copy of Mario Kart 64 offers a dependable, tested experience for fans wanting to replay one of the most beloved racing titles on N64. It’s in good condition with a well-preserved label, making it a smart choice for budget-conscious collectors or players who just want a working cartridge. Unlike multi-game options, it provides a focused, straightforward experience without complications. The absence of original packaging and manuals means it’s less appealing to those who value complete sets, but for pure gameplay, this remains a strong pick.
Pros:- Fully tested and guaranteed to work
- Good condition with a clear label
- Affordable, renewed cartridge
Cons:- No original box or manuals included
- Limited to a single game experience
Best for: Players who want a guaranteed working copy of Mario Kart 64 without paying full retail for new or boxed versions.
Not ideal for: Collectors seeking complete packaging or those interested in multi-game cartridges.
- Condition:Renewed
- Includes:Cartridge only
- Compatibility:Nintendo 64
Our verdict“This cartridge is a reliable, budget-friendly way to enjoy Mario Kart 64, ideal for players prioritizing function over packaging.”
How We Picked
We evaluated each product based on key factors that matter most to N64 enthusiasts: game variety, compatibility, build quality, ease of use, and value for money. Multi-game cartridges were scrutinized for their game selection and reliability, while single titles were assessed on authenticity and condition. We prioritized options that offer a good balance between affordability and performance, ensuring they work well with standard N64 consoles. Our ranking reflects how well each product meets these criteria, helping buyers find solutions suited to their preferences—whether for collection, gaming, or nostalgia.Factors to Consider When Choosing N64 Games
Choosing the right N64 game or cartridge depends on several critical factors. Beyond just picking your favorite titles, you should consider compatibility with your console, the authenticity of the game, and whether a multi-game solution offers enough variety for your needs. It’s also worth thinking about the condition of used or renewed cartridges and their ease of use. By understanding these factors, you can avoid common pitfalls like purchasing incompatible or low-quality products, ensuring a satisfying gaming experience.Compatibility and Console Model
Not all N64 cartridges are created equal, especially when considering different console revisions or third-party hardware. Some multi-game cartridges might not work well with certain models or require specific adapters. Always verify compatibility before purchasing to avoid frustration. Additionally, if you own a modified or retrofitted console, check whether the cartridge supports these modifications to prevent issues during gameplay.
Authenticity vs. Multi-Game Convenience
Single-game cartridges like Super Mario 64 offer a pure and authentic experience, often with better build quality and reliable performance. However, they lack variety, which can be limiting for collectors or those who want multiple titles on one cartridge. Multi-game cartridges provide a broad selection but sometimes compromise on reliability or game quality. Buyers should weigh their desire for authenticity against the convenience of having multiple titles in one package.
Build Quality and Durability
The durability of cartridges varies widely, especially in used or third-party options. High-quality, new, or renewed cartridges tend to last longer and are less prone to connection issues. Cheaper or heavily used cartridges might suffer from contact problems or mechanical wear, leading to gameplay interruptions. Investing in reputable brands or refurbished options can save money and frustration in the long run.
Pre-Loaded and Multi-Game Options
Pre-loaded cartridges or multi-game solutions are appealing for their convenience, especially for casual players or collectors looking for variety without multiple physical cartridges. However, they often come with tradeoffs like limited game selection, potential loading issues, or higher prices. It’s important to check the included games’ quality and the cartridge’s storage capacity to ensure it meets your gaming needs.
Price and Value
Price varies significantly across N64 products, especially between original titles and multi-game cartridges. While multi-game options are usually more economical per game, they can cost more upfront and sometimes include lower-quality titles. Conversely, original cartridges tend to be pricier but offer authentic gameplay. Consider your budget and what kind of experience you prioritize—authenticity or variety—when making your choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are multi-game cartridges reliable for long-term use?
Multi-game cartridges can be reliable if they are well-made and from reputable sources, but lower-quality or heavily used options might present issues like data corruption or connection problems. It’s wise to read reviews and opt for products with good durability ratings. If longevity is a priority, investing in officially licensed or refurbished cartridges can help ensure a smoother experience over time.
Can I use a multi-game cartridge on any N64 console?
Most multi-game cartridges are designed to be compatible with standard N64 consoles, but some might have compatibility issues with certain models or region locks. Always check the product specifications and confirm compatibility with your specific console version before purchase. If you have a modified or imported console, additional considerations may apply.
Is it better to buy original cartridges or multi-game solutions?
The choice depends on your priorities. Original cartridges provide authentic gameplay, better build quality, and often higher resale value, but they can be expensive or hard to find. Multi-game cartridges offer variety and convenience at a lower cost per game, but sometimes sacrifice quality or authenticity. Weigh your desire for authenticity against the need for variety and budget constraints.
How do I know if a used cartridge is still good?
Inspect used cartridges for physical damage, corrosion, or dirt on the contacts. Ask the seller about their condition and whether they have tested the cartridge. If possible, test the cartridge on your console before finalizing the purchase to verify that it loads and plays correctly. Reputable sellers and refurbished options tend to be more reliable in offering long-lasting performance.
Are pre-loaded or multi-game cartridges legal?
Pre-loaded and multi-game cartridges are generally legal if they contain games you own or have licensed. However, some unauthorized copies or emulated content can infringe on copyrights. Always purchase from reputable sources that respect intellectual property rights to avoid legal issues. If you’re unsure, check whether the seller provides proof of legitimate licensing or offers officially licensed products.
Conclusion
For collectors and purists, the Super Mario 64 remains the best overall choice due to its authenticity and gameplay quality. Budget-conscious buyers will appreciate the 342-in-1 Multi Game Cartridge or similar options for their value and variety, even if they compromise slightly on reliability. Newcomers or casual players should consider a pre-loaded or renewed cartridge for simplicity and ease of use. Those seeking a premium experience will find high-quality, official titles like GoldenEye 007 or Donkey Kong 64 worth the investment. Ultimately, your decision should reflect whether you prioritize authenticity, variety, budget, or ease of access—each type of buyer has a clear best fit among these options.
